healtth-care - hCG Levels after Miscarriage - Questions and Looking for Help >> 2022

I have crossposted in r/miscarriage as well, I'm just hoping to get some more insight on my situation :)

I’m hoping someone has had a similar experience to me & might be able to shed some light on what’s happening right now.

I miscarried twice in 2021, both missed. My first miscarriage was in May, and was discovered at about 9 weeks but the embryo was measuring 6w3d. My second was in October, and was discovered about the same time, but the embryo was about 7w6d. For both, I used misoprostol to instigate the miscarriage. My first went totally normally and while it was a horrible experience emotionally, physically it wasn’t that bad. I got my period back approx. 7 weeks after my first miscarriage, and my beta hCG was <5 just after the period.

My second miscarriage initially occurred on October 9. It was by far the most excruciating and traumatizing experience of my life and mile apart from my first. Not only that, but after I miscarried I continued on feeling pregnant (exhausted, nauseous, vomiting, etc etc). I figured I had retained tissue but (full disclosure) was too depressed to get myself in for a blood draw so I just suffered for a few weeks. On November 2, 3.5 weeks after I took misoprostol, the miscarriage completed, and after that I felt physically normal again.

On December 3, I went in for a blood draw to ensure my hCG was back to normal. I never checked my results and never heard from my doctor, but my hCG was measured at 83 at that time. After meeting with a specialist, I went in on January 12th and my hCG was 26, and again on the 14th and it was 24. I had a period on December 15th, and again on January 14th. I went in again for a blood draw (just getting blood work done the specialist had requested, not thinking I was pregnant) on Feb 22, and my hCG was 14, then the doctor called and asked me to go again, so March 2 it was 12. They called and asked me to go in again (!) so March 7 it was 19. I then spoke directly to the doctor, and he said I was either pregnant and very early at that time or the biotin in my prenatal was making my hCG levels high. I had an ultrasound done and he was confident there was no retained tissue. He asked me to go in when my cycle was due to start and then follow up 48 hrs after with another blood draw to see what the levels were.

I went in on Wednesday and just got the results back – 19 again! I have an appt to go in today to get the last blood draw done to see how the levels have changed. I am so hopelessly confused as to why my levels were never down below 5. The doctor thought I maybe had a chemical pregnancy in November (hence the reading of 80 in early Dec) but honestly… I can’t even be sure my husband and I had sex in Nov. As previously mentioned I was incredibly depressed for most of the fall. I feel very strongly that my period should be coming any minute now (I’m at day 32 in my cycle, I’m typically around 30 days per cycle but I did insert progesterone vaginally one day last week before the doctor realized that I’m fairly confident I’m not pregnant so not sure if that’s delayed anything). I feel it’s unlikely that I’m pregnant because we only had sex twice this month, both time using a condom, although both times we did fool around before putting the condom on so I suppose it could have been one of those cautionary tales they tell you in health class lol.

Sorry for this massive long story, I just don’t know what the heck is going on and I’m hoping someone has insight from their own experiences to help me. I’ll summarize my dates and hCG levels below:

10/9: took misoprostol
11/2: miscarriage completed to the best of my knowledge
12/3: hCG 83
12/15: period
01/12: hCG 26
01/14: hCG 24
01/14: period
02/15: period
02/22: hCG 14
03/02: hCG 12
03/07: hCG 19
03/16: hCG 19

I have been using a prenatal with no biotin in it for about 1.5 weeks now; is it possible my hCG levels are still high from the old prenatal?
