My experience over Obstetrics "Help with Birth Control after Benign Breast Disease diagnosis"

Hi,

36F

I don’t know if I should remain on hormonal birth control, and I can’t find an answer. Background: I have a family history of breast cancer (mother, aunt, grandmother), so I was referred by my gynecologist for early breast cancer screening. Imaging (MRI) ended up showing something, so a biopsy was ordered, and I was diagnosed with focal atypical lobular hyperplasia within a fibroadenoma. I hadn’t felt a lump, no other breast or health complaints. No BRCA, mother’s breast cancer was estrogen positive.

I understand that this is mostly a risk factor for future cancer, not so much a pre-cursor, but it was recommended that I contact a breast surgeon. I have a consultation in August. In the meantime, I asked my gyno if I should remain on Nuvaring, which contains estrogen. She said it was probably OK, but that I should confirm with the breast surgeon. I called the breast surgeon’s exchange, and they said that the doctor will not give me medical advice until they’ve reviewed my chart (August). I can’t find anything definitive online for a case like mine.

Should I remain on Nuvaring? Don’t want to do anything stupid for my health, but my partner and I don’t want children and I would like to be on a reliable form of birth control.

Thank you for your help
