What is "Obstetrics " ?
Obstetrics is the field of study concentrated on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. As a medical specialty, obstetrics is combined with gynecology under the discipline known as obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), which is a surgical field.
My experience over Obstetrics "Abnormal frequent periods for 10 month where I'm bleeding twice a month"
I have a question on how to proceed with my current health and would love to hear your advise.
Background: [30F] 5'4", 140 pounds, Ethnicity - Indian
Having abnormal frequent periods for 10 months. Was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 8 years ago and informed in early 20s that I have PCOS. Taking levothyroxine 100 mcg, iron supplements, and currently put on birth control.
No history of smoking, drinking, or use of recreational drugs. No history of sexual activity, ie. no partner.
I am having abnormal periods. I can bleed for around 7-10 days, stop for 13 days, and restart bleeding again. Of the 7-10 days of bleeding, I bleed heavily for up to 4 days. Those 4 days are challenging as I need to change my pad every 4 hours, and wake up at night every 3-4 hours and run to the bathroom to relieve the blood. There is a lot of clotting that is larger than 2cm. I did take tranexamic acid for a week, but not sure if I was to see a change as nothing has made a difference as of yet. Thankfully my periods are not painful, ie no cramps.
I was put on birth control by my doctor to regulate my cycle. I have been on birth control for 9 months but it is not helping as this irregular cycle is still the same.
I don't know what is going on anymore and truthfully I'm just tired, cold, and pale. I cannot walk at my normal speed, have shed a huge amount of hair, and acne is not under control anymore as now my face looks like a constellation and I'm breaking out on my back.
I trust my doctor, I just don't know what are the appropriate questions to ask her. I have not done any diagnostics, my treatment is based on signs/symptom description and lab work on thyroid levels.
Do you know what I might be going through? Will you please guide me what I should be asking my doctor? Or what diagnostics would help in finding the problem. Or should I be seeing a specialist? I'm truthfully lost on what to do.
