My experience over Obstetrics "Yeast infection for going on 3 weeks- 28/f help"

Hi all- will probably double post in a few forums because I’m desperate for any helpful info at this point.

I am a 28 y/o Caucasian female. I take 75mg of spironolactone for acne and loratadine daily. I do not smoke or do drugs and I drink socially on occasion.

I have had an itchy vagina for three weeks now. Three weeks ago I woke up with severe itching all over, but most prominently in my vagina. I’ve only ever had a yeast infection once, ten years ago after a surgery but it’s not a feeling one forgets. So I immediately called my gyno. Something important to note is that I have terrible follicular eczema and I am in the process of going for a patch test in a week or so. I’ve been experiencing this for about 7 years and finally found an allergist and dermatologist who would listen to me instead of just prescribing me a cream.

This itching mostly occurs on my legs. Knowing what I know about how easily my skin is flared with itching, I assumed that the yeast infection was flaring my eczema. I visited the gyno and she did an exam and said she thought everything looked fine and recommended I change my body wash🫠 I can’t adequately express how irritating that is to hear sometimes because I already use unscented/eczema friendly everything due to my eczema and as recommended by my allergist. Thankfully she took a sample and looked at it under a microscope and found that there was, in fact, yeast.

She prescribed me diflucan and sent me on my way. I did take diflucan before after a terrible experience with monistat the last time I had a yeast infection (10 years prior) and it cleared it up quickly. After several days I took the second dose but found really no improvement. At this point I’ve missed two days of work due to unbearable itching, constantly taking Benadryl, and sitting with an ice pack between my legs at all times to stay comfortable. I called my gyno and mentioned the whole body itching (mistake bc most practitioners don’t listen to me/believe me when I explain it) and they immediately suggested that I was having an allergic reaction to the diflucan. I urged that this was not the case and just my eczema flaring. They did not believe me and would not prescribe me another dose. They told me I should “really talk to my pcp about this”. So I did- I called my pcp, who told me to call my dermatologist. At this point it’s a nightmare. My gyno agreed to send me some anti fungal cream and my derm confirmed that it’s definitely eczema, not thrush or any type of allergic reaction happening on my legs.

My derm would not prescribe me any steroid due to my patch test coming up in a week which could jeopardize the results. The anti fungal cream that the gyn prescribed did nothing but ruin every pair of underwear I own. I then called the gyn back and then sent me over a fluconozole suppository. I’ve been doing that for 4 days, the script is for 7. Still it’s really done nothing. There is no visible rash on my vagina but it is very itchy on my vulva and around my clitoris, as well as on the inside. Sometimes I am able to go some time without thinking about it but once I move it starts to itch again. I am still using the fluconazole and now boric acid as a last ditch effort, as well as frequent ACV and baking soda bathes. I haven’t had sex in over three weeks and I feel like I’m dying, but I am SO tired of living this way.

I need to call my gyn back but what should I say?? They are so unhelpful. Is there anything that I should be asking about that I’m not? It seems like everyone just wants to send me to someone else.

Important to mention- I believe that the yeast infection occurred due to a new vaginal wash I bought a month prior. Im not someone who uses it every time I wash, just sometimes when I feel extra yucky. I have always used summers eve and never had any issues. I read a bunch of stuff online about how terrible it is for you, so I decided to try a new wash that was supposed to be more natural/sustainable/etc. i noticed right away that it didn’t really feel right when I used it (different from the summers Eve) but it didn’t make me itchy or anything so I figured I might get used to it. I used it on and off for about a month and the morning after a shower where I used it I woke up with my yeast infection. I’m fairly confident this is the cause. I only say this because I really am quite positive that this is the reason for the issue, I use unscented everything as far as body wash, detergent, etc. I did not use any new products other than the vaginal wash I mentioned. I have been for multiple allergy tests and I am not allergic to anything. Prior to this infection, I also was weened off of 50mg of sertraline and bumped down from 100mg of spiro to 75mg per my derm bc my period (which is always regular) stopped. I thought this could be a factor as well? Is anyone familiar with Brexafemme as treatment?

Thanks for reading, I appreciate any and all feedback :)

Edit- I have tested negative for STI’s. I also am no longer using vaginal wash and don’t intent to ever again. The last time I used it was no almost 4 weeks ago prior to my initial itching.
