Obstetrics - Speculums:Health care

What is "Obstetrics " ?

Obstetrics is the field of study concentrated on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. As a medical specialty, obstetrics is combined with gynecology under the discipline known as obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), which is a surgical field.

My experience over Obstetrics "Speculums"

Sorry for the intrusion! Delete this if it's not okay please!

Let me start by saying I am a male. I've been to OBGYN appointments with female SOs in the past and witnessed the entire process of an annual appointment.

I'm curious about the purpose of the speculum in the annual. I know you need to swab various places for different reasons but I feel like that could be accomplished by a Q-tip with an enclosure, I don't understand the need for the speculum. Do the walls of the vagina and the cervix need to be inspected every year? Is there anything I can look out for to help future female partners?

Thank you in advance!

PS: For any women who are uncomfortable with the size of the device there are several different sizes, the doctor might not mention it but they do exist, just ask.
