What is "Obstetrics " ?
Obstetrics is the field of study concentrated on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. As a medical specialty, obstetrics is combined with gynecology under the discipline known as obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), which is a surgical field.
My experience over Obstetrics "7+ Months of Menstruation - Is sterilization my only option?"
About a year ago I started to have heavy periods that had large clots about golf ball sized or larger. Periods were longer than usual but normally coming around the correct time. In February I started bleeding again and never stopped. I've had 2 ultrasounds months apart that showed 2 fibroids with insignificant growth. I have one measuring 3.4cm x 2.5 cm and another measuring 4.5cm x 4.4cm. I've been told that these shouldn't be large enough to cause bleeding.
I have been seen by 2 different hematologists that don't believe I have any platelet disorders. The initial thought was that it was Von Willebrands Disease but I've had several blood tests come back inconsistent with it. I did have one test in the very beginning consistent but none of my several other tests showed that I had it or any other platelet disorders.
My OBGYN has tried using a pill taper to stop the bleeding and it failed. We tried an IUD and my body expelled it sometime in the first three months and I was taking the pill the entire time we thought I had the IUD in as well. I am now on the depo shot for about a week now and not expected to see any changes with slowing or stopping my period until after the next shot or the shot after. The heavy (at times) bleeding is being managed with Lysteda but it doesn't stop the bleeding just slows it down a little bit. I have also had a endometrial (I think) biopsy that came back benign.
My iron has gotten so low I've had 3 iron infusions so far and I'm a little concerned waiting another 3-6 months to see any changes may cause me to have more infusions.
I have no answers in what may be causing the bleeding and doctors have suggested I may need to consider and ask about other procedures. I'm 27 and childless so they all have shied away from any forms of sterilization as treatment. However, I'm just not seeing any other options. Is there something I'm missing? Would ablation or hysterectomy even work?
