Obstetrics - Is it normal to have an abnormal pap smear and your dr not know why?

What is "Obstetrics " ?

Obstetrics is the field of study concentrated on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. As a medical specialty, obstetrics is combined with gynecology under the discipline known as obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), which is a surgical field.

My experience over Obstetrics "Is it normal to have an abnormal pap smear and your dr not know why?"

Hi y’all, I had my 2nd pap smear done last year and it came back abnormal. I asked why and the woman on the phone (just for context was not my dr) said it could be for a lot of reasons like higher concentration of yeast, etc etc. She said my dr is not concerned but would look further into it if my next pap smear came back abnormal. I just had an appointment with my university (to get birth control for acne treatment), and the nurse practitioner was really concerned that my OBGYN didn’t tell me the reason for the abnormality in my pap smear. I can’t get another pap smear until June because my insurance covers one per year.

Is it normal to have an abnormal pap smear and not know the cause? I’m obviously not a health professional, so I’m sorry if this is a non issue! The comments from the nurse practitioner just made me a little paranoid. TIA!
