What is "Obstetrics " ?
Obstetrics is the field of study concentrated on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. As a medical specialty, obstetrics is combined with gynecology under the discipline known as obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), which is a surgical field.
My experience over Obstetrics "i need opinions"
Im 22 weeks pregnant. Last week i had an obgyn appt to check up on the baby. This is the first appointment I've been able to get for an ultrasound and i have no reason to believe the pregnancy is abnormal in any way.
The doctor i had, before asking me any questions or doing anything, told me i needed a transvaginal probe ultrasound. I told him i wasnt comfortable with that and i just wanted an external ultrasound to check the heartbeat and make sure everything was good. He said he would only give me an external if i submitted to the internal first. I told him no, and he got unreasonably angry and told me to just leave then because he wouldn't be treating me.
I spoke to a nurse from a different hospital and a midwife i found online and they both said 21 weeks is way too late in a pregnancy for any decent doctor to recommend a transvaginal let alone demand it and that it sounded like he was insisting for creepy reasons and not medical reasons. One of them recommended i put in a formal complaint so this doesnt happen to anyone else.
Im not trying to wreck anyones career even if he was an asshole and totally unprofessional unless i can really verify that this absolutely is something that just isnt done at this stage and he was definitely doing it for a completely inappropriate non medical reason.
Whats the general concensus from other doctors here?
