What is "Obstetrics " ?
Obstetrics is the field of study concentrated on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. As a medical specialty, obstetrics is combined with gynecology under the discipline known as obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), which is a surgical field.
My experience over Obstetrics "Just some general/“silly” questions"
Hi everyone, 23 y/o non-penetrative (always awkward to explain to medical professionals when they ask that question) sexually active uterus-haver. Had a bunch of “silly” questions I thought would be appropriate for this Reddit, rather than waiting for my next appointment. Nothing urgent or necessarily personally relevant as much as just, things I’m curious about and figured people on this thread might have insight into;
1.) I’ve heard that longer periods are sometimes symptomatic of ‘lower’ fertility. Is the reverse true of shorter periods?
2.) does height/weight impact period length/weight? Do larger people have longer/heavier periods or does size not impact these factors?
3.) I had pretty irregular periods (like many people) as a kid, but I also treated it with birth control at 16 that I’ve been on since. What’s the likelihood that BC regulated my cycle vs. naturally growing out of it? What is the actual age that medical professionals consider to be when a patient’s period should be regular by?
4.) I know hormonal birth control works by simulating the hormonal conditions of pregnancy to ‘trick’ the body into thinking it ‘doesn’t have the room’ to support another pregnancy, does this mean that the side effects a patient experiences on BC would be similar to the symptoms they’d experience during pregnancy? (Asides from yknow the stuff with extra weight and pressure)
5.) going off of number 4 are experiences with hormonal birth control ever used as a “litmus test” for patients considering pregnancy? Are there any reactions to hormonal BC that would lead to a patient being considered “at-risk” for certain side effects during pregnancy?
6.) since irregular use of hormonal BC can impact long-term period cycling, does it effect long-term fertility?
7.) asides from reliability are there any actual/realistic side-effects or concerns for improper use of hormonal birth control? (A patient who missed a couple days doubling or tripling up on pills rather than waiting to get their period and re-start the medication cycle)
8.) are there any tests or things medical professionals can look at in a patient considering pregnancy or early into pregnancy that would determine if a c-section would be recommended? Is the “birthing hips” thing real and something that can be measured?
