My experience over Obstetrics "What does 9-9-9 mean?"

My wife delivered her first baby this week (yay!). She got a 3rd degree perineal tear though (not so yay) and I heard the doctors mention something about 9-9-9 and I'm not sure what they were talking about. Is it 9 stitches for each degree?
