My experience over Obstetrics "dilation"

Hello. What are some of the reasons a woman may not dilate during labor? I’m having a birth center birth and my family and in-laws are berating me asking me, “what happens if you don’t dilate like me and have to get an emergency c-section” My mom, aunts, grandma, MIL and GMIL all had c sections because their labor wasn’t progressing.
