Obstetrics - Speculum: to do or not to do?:Health care

What is "Obstetrics " ?

Obstetrics is the field of study concentrated on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. As a medical specialty, obstetrics is combined with gynecology under the discipline known as obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), which is a surgical field.

My experience over Obstetrics "Speculum: to do or not to do?"

I just went to my 6-week postpartum check up with the OB who delivered my child. This is someone I never met before but who’s a partner in the practice I go to. Considering seeing him for my second child and in general.

I am just wondering in what situations someone uses a speculum versus not. I got a manual breast exam and a bimanual exam. OB did not use a speculum. I read online that the check up after birth is also an annual exam basically, but I don’t know that I’ve ever been to a wellness exam without speculum. Is this not necessary in my case or is it perhaps a question of preference/schools of thought? Thanks!
